Dear Friends of Shobi’s Table,
Recently, we received a small mountain of blueberries in our weekly delivery from Twin Cities Food Justice. (I’m not kidding… it was over 100 pounds!) Out of both necessity to use them, and delight in having so many to work with, we decided on Blueberry Cobbler for dessert… and what a good idea it was! The other day when I was working the serving window, one guy told me that on the neighborhood corner where he hung out, Shobi’s Table was “known for really good food. You guys make the best cobbler!” We’ve certainly seen proof of good food attracting more folks to come… the last two Tuesdays we’ve served over 80 meals – almost twice the Tuesday average of last year.
When I get the chance to work the line on the food truck (put lunch orders together), I keep an ear to what’s happening at the window. The next week I overheard another guy ask about the dessert – this time we were having Strawberry Rhubarb crisp, but he was wondering if we had any more Blueberry Cobbler from the week before. I turned to the window to let him know that, unfortunately, it was all gone from last week. He told me he loved it so much, he was wondering if he could get a whole pan! His enthusiasm was infectious, and I laughed and told him we’d try to at least make it again soon for him.
Later that day, I was driving to pick up my daughter, and I passed the same guy as he was holding a sign by the freeway entrance. I waved and he recognized me from the food truck, and waved back. That day, Shobi’s Table enabled me to see a person on the corner with a sign as more deeply human. It wasn’t just someone I avoided eye contact with as I drove by, it was someone I had just met, and with whom I had just shared a joyful moment as we were both fed by the same delicious blueberry cobbler. It is those times that I am grateful for – to share food with someone who is hungry, and to see them as the beautiful humans they are. It may not fix every problem, but it feels like the beginning of fixing many problems at home in our city and around the world.

No matter if you come regularly for lunch, volunteer, or never can because your regular schedule won’t allow it, this is the event for you! Come get to know others who are part of this community, taste some samples of food that creates connection, and take your picture in Big Blue! We can’t wait to see you there.
